Dear Friends of ForWords Literacy Lab;
Fall has officially begun, and we wish you a healthy and happy change of seasons.
While we all continue to face enormous challenges, we want to acknowledge our incredible community of students, faculty and supporters. ForWords students and staff continue to inspire us daily, and have navigated the world of online learning with grace and gusto.
Our programming, which is more important now than ever before, would not be possible without your generous support. So thank you.
Fall Program Update
Our Fall 2020 virtual learning programs are buzzing with energetic discussion, writing projects and academic support in both group and 1:1 sessions.
English Language Learners at San Rafael and Terra Linda High Schools meet on line with our youth educators daily during classroom time for academic support and instruction. Additional after school programs for students at both high schools as well as Davidson Middle School meet 4 days a week.
Saturdays at ForWords is also underway with 20 new and continuing students from local high schools. These young people dedicate their free time on Saturdays to working with our education team and nurturing their creativity and 21st-century literacy skills.
The enthusiasm, originality and commitment of the students in all of our programs this fall is something to behold, and we can't wait to share more as we progress through the season.
Summer Bridge to High School
The 5-week ForWords Summer Bridge to High School program was a major success, with students and faculty quickly adapting to an online learning environment, and all students - our biggest group yet! - receiving 5 units of high school credit before beginning 9th grade this fall.
Students spent the summer writing, reading, discussing new ideas, creating art and poetry and working on skills required for their next phase of schooling with our extraordinary team of educators and interns.
Here is one of the many beautiful poems this group contributed over the summer:
College Students & College-Bound Seniors
We're pleased to share that this year's 3 ForWords Scholarship recipients have started their first semesters of college coursework (on line) at San Francisco State University, Fresno State University and the College of Marin.
Finally, it's our great pleasure to announce the start of a brand new ForWords mentorship program for college-bound seniors, in which they can work with volunteer experts to explore college options, receive assistance with essays and applications and learn about financial aid options.
Many more exciting updates and more information on all of our recent programs will be landing in your mailbox soon!
Your contributions help to make possible everything we do, from providing free literacy-based educational programs to supporting college-bound high school graduates with academic scholarships. Please consider a donation today. We are grateful to have you as a partner.
With many thanks,
Jeff Gough, President, Board of Directors
Gail Siegel, Executive Director
