Students at Banyan Integrated Studies at San Rafael High School, read William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and studied World War II as they explored the human desire for a peaceful world that is challenged by dehumanizing forces.
The students read Lord of the Flies; studied the rise of fascism and WW II, the biological basis for fear, anger and other human emotions. In Physical Education explored military formations/marches, and savage dancing from Lord of the Flies. They studied Hitler Youth, Japanese nationalism, anti-semitism, resistance movements, fire bombings and Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The students then wrote an historical inquiry paper, wrote and performed an historical play exploring their findings and conclusions, wrote and performed a short vignette on the Lord of the Flies, focusing on how evil operates, how individuals respond to evil and individual consequences for individual actions.
